Southern MD Heritage: part 1

September 8, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Southern MD: Where Time and Tide Meet (Part 1)
with Lucille Walker, Executive Director, Southern MD Heritage Area

Wednesday, September 8th   |   11am-12pm
VIRTUAL PROGRAM

This three part series will provide attendees deeper insight to the Southern Maryland’s Heritage Areas. These are places to experience – to see, hear and even taste – the authentic heritage of Maryland in ways that you cannot experience anywhere else. Heritage Areas exist where the stories of the people, the land, and the waters of Maryland, which have been intertwined for thousands of years, are told. In Heritage Areas individuals, businesses, non-profits and governments form partnerships to preserve the best of Maryland’s historic sites and towns, unspoiled natural landscapes and enduring traditions. These tangible links to both place and the past encourage residents to recognize they have a special piece of the American story to treasure and share with others, and that in doing so they create more livable and economically sustainable communities.

Destination Southern Maryland is also the Southern Maryland Heritage Area Consortium (SMHAC), whose mission is to enhance Southern Maryland through innovative heritage tourism experiences, comprehensive cultural and natural resource conservation, and excellence in educational opportunities. SMHAC is also an economic engine, providing product development and increased economic activity throughout the region through grants, partnership building, and sustaining regional identity.

Maryland Rediscovery 400 is an initiative dedicated to the rediscovery and interpretation of significant historic sites in Southern Maryland. In 2019, a partnership formed between state and county agencies, under the Southern Maryland Heritage Area, to study and commemorate the places where people interacted within a diverse cultural environment. The mission is to illuminate diverse perspectives and experiences of early Marylanders and Native Peoples through the study of material culture, structures, and landscapes.

About the Speaker
Lucille Walker
has been the Executive Director of the Southern Maryland Heritage Area (also known as Destination Southern Maryland) for the past 5 years.  She is the Chair and legislative lead for the statewide Maryland Heritage Area Coalition, and Vice-Chair of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC).  She serves on a number of statewide boards and steering committees and is the Cultural Heritage representative on the Advisory Council for the Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary.

The Southern Maryland Heritage Area (a state-based heritage area) is in the process of becoming the 56th National Heritage Area in the United States, with legislation introduced into the U.S. Congress by Senator Ben Cardin and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, with the support of Senator Chris Van Hollen.  This designation will raise the national and international profile of the region.  Additionally, this heritage area has created the Maryland Rediscovery 400 initiative, with the purpose of telling a more complete history of Maryland and its beginnings, with a focus on descendant populations, African Americans, and First Peoples.

Ms. Walker received her undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, followed by graduate studies at Oxford University.  She received her Master’s degree in Liberal Arts (Great Books Program) from St. John’s College, Annapolis.  She is a passionate advocate for the distinct heritage of the Southern Maryland region.
