Staying United Across COVID-19 Impacts

ATTENDEES WILL:

  • Learn about what the United Way of Southern MD does
  • Be informed on what is new with the United Way
  • Discover why you should consider getting involved with United Way
  • Find out what United Way is doing to help southern MD recover from COVID-19 impacts
  • Hear from a community partner who has been supported by United Way

The United Way of Southern Maryland has formed to impact lives in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s Counties by mobilizing the caring power of our community to advance our common good. We help people by fighting for the health, education and financial stability of every person in every community. The United Way funds 45 programs that are improving the health, education and financial stability of your neighbors in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s Counties through our Community Impact Grants. These grants are creating long lasting changes in our community.


About the Speaker
Mr. Mel Brennan,
is currently serving as CEO of United Way of Southern MD. Since 1990, Mel has led and served in a number of sectors: from impact non-profit organizations to university teaching to global sport governance and location-based entertainment, from summer camp to court compliance, Mel brings local-to-global experience in the C-Suite or at the executive level to bear in the forging of partnerships, insights and solutions.

Mel has led in spaces such as Thread, Inc. in Baltimore, the YMCA Movement in MD and NJ, the Maryland Food Bank and Fuel Fund of Maryland.  He began his professional career with The City of New York as a Confidential Investigator with the Civilian Complaint Review Board, then spent time in for-profit endeavors with the Walt Disney Co., World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc., and Sega GameWorks LLC. A transition to governance, academia and thought leadership saw opportunities to work as Head of Special Projects with FIFA, CONCACAF and PhD study and teaching at the University of Stirling (UK) and Towson University, respectively.  Mel served at Rikers Island in NYC as the Deputy Director of OCC, and Mel was also the curator of the first Baltimore TED Talk series, TEDxBaltimore, in 2011.  He earned degrees in Political Science and History from McDaniel College in 1996, minoring in French and Economics, and pursued a PhD from 2003-2008 focusing on sport and human rights.  His foundation working with youth goes back to 1989 and eight summers of directing of a 300-participant summer camp in his hometown of Willingboro NJ.  Mel lives and loves with his wife Laurel, three children, and one rescued dog in Westminster, Carroll County.
